The dynamic plate test (also known as LWD) is a field test for determining the ultimate bearing capacity of soils and predicted settlement under a specific given load.

The test basically consists of loading a steel plate at the base and dropping a measured weight vertically down until it directly hits the centre. After the test is complete the total maximum displacement of the plate is measured.
